Semantic Web (SW) is a vision of the future of the World Wide Web (WWW) that will revolutionize the Internet by changing the way the Internet and the applications on Internet are developed and used. As a consequence, it will also change the lifestyle of a common man using Internet at present. Many people using the Internet have heard about it and most of them are keen to know more.

The Semantic Web (SW), is an evolution of current Web or World Wide (WWW) that will transform it from the repository of static Web pages that are read and understood by the humans only, to the collection of dynamic and meaningful Web pages and resources, that can not only be processed but also understood by the machines and software agents on behalf of the humans.

As the name suggests, Semantic Web will be the Web with the semantics or “meaning”, i.e., having explicit definitions of every thing present on it. This is done with the help of the ontology, i.e., a collection of terms, their meanings and relationships for a particular domain. As a consequence, the software agents or machines can understand the contents of the Web pages placed on the Web.

At present the Semantic Web is not practical on large or global scale. However, many of the concepts and tools are implemented and functional on small and medium scale. The main contribution is from the academia and research community, whereas, the industry has not yet focused towards that.
